ROAR grew out of the award-winning documentary series, No Country for Old People: A Nursing Home Exposé. The series shines a powerful light on the harrowing realities of long-term care in our country. Filmmaker Susie Singer Carter knows this world all too well. It’s the reason she decided to share her personal and painful story in this hard-hitting docuseries that chronicles the last 6 months of her mother’s life in 2022 while living in a 5-star nursing home in Los Angeles. Despite Susie’s relentless advocacy, her mother suffered and died in a 5-star facility from what was inarguably egregious neglect and abuse that was nothing short of criminal. No Country for Old People humanizes the countless residents who have suffered as a result of systemic abuse and neglect. It exposes how decades of weak regulations, lack of oversight, and enforcement have left vulnerable individuals without the dignity and care they deserve. The series features over 70 interviews with the most respected experts as well as others affected by this systemic crisis who, like Susie and millions of others, had absolutely no idea how broken and corrupt the nursing home system truly was until attempting to navigate it. Unable to unsee what she saw, she made the decision to share her story with the world. She wants everyone to know. R.O.A.R. was born out of these truths, as both a response to the injustices highlighted in the documentary and as a call to arms for anyone who believes in the inherent worth of every human being. Through real stories and hard evidence, one thing the documentary makes abundantly clear is that traditional advocacy alone is insufficient and the time to add bold, grassroots action is now ROAR IS THAT MOVEMENT
