The first six months of 2022, I witnessed the egregious and inhumane consequences of our broken long-term care system. I saw things I cannot unsee, and must not unsee.

My mother was a resident at a five-star nursing facility in Los Angeles for five years. It was a place I took comfort in, believing she was receiving the very best care possible. And as it turns out, she was. Unfortunately, what is considered the “best” has quietly become the worst. It has become the industry standard.

This systemic crisis has gone largely undetected for decades, perpetuated by an industry that too often places profit over people and treats human beings as commodities.

Despite advocating for my mother every single day, she died on July 17, 2022, undeniably as a result of severe nursing home neglect and abuse.

I cannot stop thinking about what is happening to the residents who do not have advocates. That is why I made No Country for Old People, and why I founded ROAR.

This is not just my mother’s story. It is a warning. It is a call to action. And unless we change this system, it could be yours.
